Development
According to Geoffrey Mosoku and Moses Njagih (2012), the former
Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka longtime ago signed a pre-election pact but left open the question of who will be the candidate and running mate.  But as Kalonzo switched to Raila’s side, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance and Eldoret North MP William Ruto’s United Republican Party, responded by bringing on board United Democratic Party candidate Musalia Mudavadi.
Interestingly, the battle lines appeared to echo those of 2002, where Uhuru was a Kanu candidate, Mudavadi his running mate and Ruto the influential minister and director of elections. On the other side was Raila backing President Kibaki alongside Kalonzo and Water minister Charity Ngilu who turned back to Odinga’s political fold. The URP-TNA-UDF deposited their new deal with the national electoral body, as the picture of a two-horse race just as it were in 2007 between Kibaki-Raila took shape, albeit with some other candidates on the sides. They include Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa and Kenya National Congress candidate Peter Kenneth who also signed separate coalition deals (ibid , 2012)
Current situation
With slightly over a year to the August 2017 General Election, Western Kenya leaders are grappling with the dilemma of whether to form a regional party or support the two main coalitions, (Ignatius Odanga 2016). Apart of this western Kenya leaders, categorical rejected the IEBC Leaders for not continue managing it even for the next 2017 General election.

Few days ago, Police used tear gas and water cannons to break up protests called by the Cord leaders to force out the leadership of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) before the next elections. In Nairobi, CORD leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula claimed that the Government was protecting the nine commissioners so that they can help Jubilee to win the 2017 General Election; They vowed to boycott the polls if the current team remains in office, (ibid 2016).
